Romance seems to waft through the air on Capri, accompanied by the scent of lemon blossoms and fresh sea air. You come to the Island of Capri for the spectacular scenery of one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean. It’s an island capable of changing lives and its beauty infuses the soul forever. You come to savour the atmosphere that seems to cast a magical spell. Capri is beautiful – seriously beautiful. There’s barely a grubby building or untended garden to blemish the splendour. Steep cliffs rise majestically from an impossibly blue sea; elegant villas drip with wisteria and bougainvillea.
This photo has not been retouched, inside the water is exactly as you see here, a crystalline blue with silver reflections. Less than floating on water, you feel as if you are suspended in the heavens. At least once in your lifetime, you should experience this marvel of nature and see firsthand why the Grotta Azzura is the most famous sight on Capri island.
Capri’s most beautiful panorama? Our favourite view has to be that which can be seen from the summit of Monte Solaro, which, soaring 589 meters above sea level, is the highest and most panoramic point on the island. Here the view extends across the whole of the island of Capri, the surrounding Bay of Naples, the Amalfi Coast and as far as the distant mountains of Calabria.
This was the dream home of the Swedish physician, Axel Munthe. In Villa San Michele a number of ancient artefacts are displayed. There are fragments of sarcophaguses, busts, Roman paving, marble and columns can be seen. In the garden there is a Greek tomb and a granite Sphinx which gazes out over the whole Island of Capri.
The three spurs of rock which rise up out of the sea, within meters of the island’s Southern coast. The rocks have each been given a name: the first, still attached to the land, is called Stella, the second, separated from the first block by a stretch of sea; Faraglione di Mezzo and the third, Faraglione di Fuori or Scopolo, meaning the head or promontory stretching into the sea.
The island of regeneration, of energies, of beauty and history. A volcanic island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, It lies at the northern end of the Gulf of Naples and is roughly an hour’s ride by ferry from the port of Naples. The island measures approximately 10 km east to west and 7 km north to south. The highest peak on the island is Mount Epomeo 2,585 feet. Ischia’s main industry is tourism, centring on thermal spas for tourists eager to enjoy the fruits of the island’s natural volcanic activity, it’s hot springs and its volcanic mud. It is an intriguing mix of sprawling spa towns, abundant gardens, buried necropolises and spectacular scenery, with forests, vineyards and picturesque small towns.
Aragonese Castle is a medieval castle standing on a volcanic rocky islet that connects to the larger island of Ischia by a causeway. The castle was built by Hiero I of Syracuse in 474 BC. At the same time, two towers were built to control enemy fleets’ movements. The rock was then occupied by Parthenopeans. In 326 BC the fortress was captured by Romans, and then again by the Parthenopeans. In 1441 Alfonso V of Aragon connected the rock to the island with a stone bridge instead of the prior wood bridge, and fortified the walls in order to defend the inhabitants against the raids of pirates. In 1912, the castle was sold to a private owner. Today the castle is the most visited monument of the island.
This Soccorso church in the town of Forio (Chiesa del Soccoroso) would be the most famous church on the island of Ischia, or maybe all over Italy. This was also the view of the 1972 movie Avanti starring Jack Lemon. This church’s interior is small but interesting with beautiful arches and vaulted ceilings.
Since the church is located at the western end of the island, at dusk, the white stucco of the building becomes gradually red by the sunset reflected on the ocean. It is in the evening that you must visit and do not forget to bring your camera !
La Mortella Garden
A symphony of plants, La Mortella (the myrtles) is the former home and gardens of the late British composer William Walton and his Argentine wife, Susana. Designed by Russell Page and inspired by the Moorish gardens of Spain’s Alhambra, it is recognised as one of Italy’s finest botanical gardens. Stroll among terraces, pools, palms, fountains and more than 1000 rare and exotic plants from all over the world. The lower section of the garden is humid and tropical, while the upper level features Mediterranean plants and beautiful views over Forio and the coast.
